DALL-E
We are more connected than ever – so they say.
The rise of social media, and parasocial relationships, has meant that fewer people are connecting in real life (IRL for the aficionados). Social circles are small or non-existent for some, children spend more time on screens than with each other, and adults can’t go more than one hour without reaching for their devices. It’s kinda crazy.
I’m not claiming to have all the answers. And I’m certainly not perfect – I’ve struggled with my own digital habits. But I have learned one thing.
The digital era prevents people from being fully present. Devices and social media applications constantly pull our attention in a million different directions. As a result, people are more digitally connected but are deprived of what they actually need.
What people actually need is to be heard. Not over the phone, not on Snapchat, not in an email, but in real life.
I believe you change lives not by shouting advice but by giving people the space they need to express their vulnerabilities. That means taking a break from scrolling, looking each other in the eye, and making room for real social connection. The kind that lights up your amygdala and sends your serotonin levels through the roof.
In my life, I’ve allowed people to be heard by being a great listener. It’s helped me build lifelong relationships, understand people with differing views, and facilitate social connection that fuels my life.
I think the world would benefit from more people willing to listen to one another. Not on screens, but in real life. As you move through the world, consider giving people what they need; your presence. And allow someone to be heard. It can change their life and yours.
Keep crushing.
Cheers,
